NM (Nano Memory) is a proprietary storage format developed by Huawei. Unlike microSD, which is an open standard used across thousands of devices from hundreds of manufacturers, NM card is specific to Huawei smartphones and tablets that have been equipped with a combined SIM/NM card tray. The physical dimensions of an NM card are 12.3mm × 8.8mm × 0.67mm — identical to a Nano SIM card and approximately 45% smaller by footprint than a microSD card. This means it occupies the SIM card tray space rather than requiring a separate storage slot, which Huawei used to enable NM storage in devices that are thinner and have less internal space for components than they would need if a separate microSD slot were added. The NM card connects to the device via the eMMC 5.1 interface — the same protocol used for internal storage in smartphones — which provides the card’s read and write speed characteristics. To use an NM card on a computer for file transfers, a dedicated Huawei NM card reader (sold separately) that connects via USB is required, as standard SD card readers and microSD adapters are not compatible with the NM card form factor.
