The HERO 25K sensor performs identically to the version in the G903 — 25,600 DPI maximum, 400 IPS tracking speed, zero smoothing, filtering and acceleration, 1ms wireless report rate via LIGHTSPEED. The G502 LIGHTSPEED’s distinguishing feature in the sensor category is the adjustable weight system, which influences how the sensor’s output translates to the physical feel of mouse movement. The six removable weights (each weighing approximately 3.6g, with the system accommodating combinations up to approximately 18g of additional mass beyond the 114g base weight) are placed in a tray accessible from the underside of the mouse. Weights can be distributed toward the front, rear, left or right of the tray to shift the centre of mass — moving mass forward reduces the effort required to initiate forward movements, moving it rearward provides more resistance to unintended forward movements. Users with larger hands who generate more incidental mouse movement may prefer a heavier configuration for stability; users who play low-sensitivity and move the mouse across a large surface area may prefer lighter configurations for reduced fatigue. The ability to tune the mass and balance without purchasing a different mouse makes the G502 one of the few mice that can be physically adapted to a user’s preferences.

Button and Scroll Engineering

The Mechanical Button Tensioning System is one of the G502 LIGHTSPEED’s differentiating engineering features. Standard gaming mouse primary buttons use a simple pivot mechanism where the button shell depresses a microswitch directly — the click feel degrades over time as the pivot mechanism develops play and the microswitch spring resistance changes with wear cycles. The G502’s tensioning system adds a metal spring element that maintains constant tension on the primary button from above, keeping the button in firm contact with the microswitch at all times and providing consistent actuation force throughout the button’s service life. The result is primary buttons with a sharper, crisper click that does not soften or develop pre-travel over extended use. The hyper-fast scroll wheel toggles between two modes via a switch on the underside of the mouse: tactile stepped scroll (detented, click-per-notch) for precise item selection and navigation, and free-spinning mode where the scroll wheel rotates freely with virtually no resistance, allowing rapid scrolling through long documents, web pages and inventory lists with a single wrist flick. The wheel can also be tilted left and right for horizontal scrolling and is itself a programmable button when pressed down.

Power and Construction

The 60-hour battery life is measured at default LIGHTSYNC RGB lighting settings — substantially more than the 40–50 hour figures typical of competing wireless gaming mice with RGB. With RGB disabled, battery extends to approximately 60 hours or beyond. The 5-minute fast charge adds 2.5 hours of gameplay — a practical rescue for a depleted mouse before a session. POWERPLAY compatibility allows the G502 LIGHTSPEED to be charged continuously on the POWERPLAY mouse mat (sold separately), eliminating battery management entirely. The endoskeleton construction reduces the mouse’s shell wall thickness to 1.2mm — thinner than most consumer mice which rely on shell thickness for rigidity — by moving structural integrity to an internal lightweight frame. This allows material to be removed from non-structural areas while maintaining the overall rigidity required for a precision peripheral, achieving the 7-gram reduction from the previous G502 wireless version without compromising feel or durability. The right-handed ergonomic shape is the same ID used across the G502 family since the original — a thumb shelf on the left side, textured grip surfaces on left and right flanks, and an arched main body designed for palm and claw grip styles.

What is the difference between the G502 LIGHTSPEED and G502 HERO (wired)?

The G502 LIGHTSPEED is the wireless version with LIGHTSPEED 2.4GHz connectivity, HERO 25K sensor, and a 60-hour battery. The G502 HERO is the wired version using a USB cable and the same HERO 25K sensor. Both share identical shape, button layout, adjustable weights and scroll wheel. The LIGHTSPEED is heavier by approximately 10g due to the battery. Performance in wired and wireless modes is identical — both run HERO 25K at 1ms report rate.

How do I switch the scroll wheel between stepped and free-spin modes?

There is a small toggle switch on the underside of the mouse, positioned just forward of the weight tray. Sliding it toward the front activates free-spin mode — the wheel rotates freely with minimal resistance. Sliding it toward the rear activates stepped (detented) mode with tactile clicks per scroll notch. The mode can be toggled without lifting the mouse from the surface during use.

What is the difference between the G502 LIGHTSPEED and G903?

Both use HERO 25K and LIGHTSPEED at identical performance levels. The G502 LIGHTSPEED is right-handed ergonomic with adjustable weights, hyper-fast scroll, mechanical button tensioning, and 11 buttons. Is G HUB required to use the G502 LIGHTSPEED?
