What Over-Ear Actually Changes

The Tune 720BT is circumaural — the cushions sit on the head around the ear rather than on the ear itself, so the clamping force is carried by the skull rather than by cartilage. That is the single biggest comfort difference between this and the Tune 510BT or 520BT, and it is why the 720BT suits a working day or a long flight where the smaller models suit a commute. The seal also matters acoustically: an enclosed cup traps low frequencies that leak away from an on-ear design, which is why the same 40mm driver and the same Pure Bass tuning produce fuller, more present bass here. The 32Ω impedance and 101dB sensitivity mean any phone or laptop drives them to full volume without an amplifier. In practice the cups on the 720BT are moderate rather than generous, so if you have larger ears the fit will be closer to the edge of the ear than the deep enclosure of a premium over-ear model — comfortable for most, but worth knowing.

Seventy-six hours is the highest figure in the Tune range and it is measured at moderate volume, so real use at commuting levels — where volume goes up to compete with traffic and train noise — will land lower, realistically in the 55 to 65 hour band. Multipoint keeps the 720BT connected to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously — typically a laptop and a phone. Watch something on the laptop, and when a call arrives on the phone the headphones switch across on their own and hand back when the call ends. No disconnecting, no re-pairing, which is the friction that stops most people from using one pair across their devices in the first place. Voice Aware addresses a problem that is easy to overlook until it happens to you: with your ears covered, your own voice sounds muffled and you instinctively speak louder than you need to, which is why people on calls with headphones often sound like they are shouting. Voice Aware routes a measured amount of your own voice from the microphone back into the cups so you hear yourself naturally and speak at a normal level, and the amount is adjustable in the app. The free JBL Headphones app also carries a graphic EQ with presets and a custom curve saved to the headphones — so if the factory Pure Bass emphasis is heavier than you want for podcasts or acoustic material, you can pull it back permanently rather than living with it.

How does the 720BT compare to the Tune 510BT and 520BT?

The 510BT and 520BT are on-ear, resting the cushions on your ear; the 720BT is over-ear, with the cups around the ear, which is more comfortable over long sessions and seals better for bass. Battery runs 40 hours on the 510BT, 57 on the 520BT and 76 on the 720BT. The 720BT is also the only one of the three with a detachable audio cable for wired listening — the 510BT and 520BT are Bluetooth only. All three share JBL Pure Bass tuning, and the 520BT and 720BT both add app EQ and Voice Aware.

Do the Tune 720BT have noise cancellation?

No. There is no active noise cancellation. The closed over-ear cups do block a reasonable amount of background noise passively — more than an on-ear design, because the seal is more complete — but ambient sound remains audible. For ANC in the same range, look at the JBL Tune 670NC or 770NC.

Can I use them wired?

Yes — a detachable audio cable is supplied in the box. Plug it into the headphones and into any 3.5mm output and they work as wired headphones. This covers aeroplane entertainment systems, older equipment without Bluetooth, and situations where the battery has run down. The cable is a separate item in the box, so keep it with the headphones if you expect to need it.

What does Voice Aware do?

With your ears covered, your own voice sounds muffled and you instinctively speak louder than you need to. Voice Aware picks your voice up on the microphone and plays a controlled amount of it back into the cups during calls, so you hear yourself at a natural level and speak normally. The amount fed back is adjustable in the JBL Headphones app.

Do I need the JBL Headphones app?
