Driver size is the diameter of the speaker element inside each earcup — larger drivers can move more air and generally reproduce lower frequencies with more authority. The Cloud Core’s 53mm drivers are the same specification used in the original HyperX Cloud headset, which established the Cloud line’s reputation for audio performance significantly above its price bracket. The 50Hz lower limit of the frequency response captures the sub-bass range where explosion impacts, engine sounds and low-frequency environmental audio sit — most headsets at this price point roll off noticeably above 80–100Hz, losing the impact of low-end game audio. The 18,000 Hz upper limit covers the full range of human hearing for most adults, reproducing high-frequency detail cues that are critical for competitive gameplay — specifically the high-frequency transients of footsteps, distant gunshots and environmental sounds that experienced players use for positional awareness. The closed-cup design creates a seal around the ear that both improves bass reproduction (the seal prevents bass frequencies from leaking out before they can be perceived) and provides passive isolation from ambient noise.

The comfort characteristics of the Cloud Core come from two design choices: memory foam and aluminium construction. Memory foam (viscoelastic foam) responds to body heat and pressure by softening and conforming to the contact surface — on a headset, this means the ear cups and headband gradually shape to the individual user’s head rather than maintaining a fixed rigid geometry. The result is that clamping force is distributed across a larger contact area, reducing localised pressure points that cause discomfort during extended sessions. Standard foam does not have this property — it springs back to its original shape immediately, maintaining the same contact points throughout use. The leatherette covering provides a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that doesn’t trap heat as aggressively as fabric alternatives. The aluminium frame serves a different function — structural rigidity under repeated bending and flex cycles. Gaming headsets are taken on and off frequently, often stored by being folded or compressed. A plastic frame subjected to repeated flex cycles develops micro-fractures at stress points (typically at the pivot joints) and eventually snaps. Aluminium resists this fatigue significantly better, maintaining structural integrity over years of regular use.

DTS Headphone:X is a virtual surround sound processing system that takes a multi-channel audio signal and applies head-related transfer functions — mathematical models of how sound from different directions reaches the ears — to produce the perception of directional audio from two physical speakers. On PC, this is enabled by the included USB sound card which decodes DTS signals and applies the spatial processing. The effect most useful for gaming is the front-back distinction and height awareness that stereo alone cannot convey — DTS processing makes sounds from behind or above the player perceptibly different from sounds at the same distance from the front or sides. For the 3.5mm connection used on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and mobile, the headset operates in standard stereo mode — DTS processing is not available without the USB card. The detachable noise-cancelling microphone connects via a 3.5mm jack on the left earcup — it can be removed entirely when using the headset as headphones. The flexible boom positions the capsule close to the mouth for better pickup and reduced background noise capture. Discord and TeamSpeak certification confirms voice clarity on the platform used by most gaming communicators.
