The Audio-Technica ATH-M20x is the entry point to Audio-Technica’s M-Series — the same family as the studio-standard ATH-M50x — and one of the most recommended first pairs of headphones for home recording, mixing, podcasting and content creation. Closed-back, over-ear earcups seal around your ears to keep outside noise out and stop sound leaking into your microphone. 40mm drivers with rare-earth magnets are tuned for clear, detailed sound with a solid low end. A 3-metre cable leaves the left earcup, so you can move around the desk freely, and it comes with a 6.3mm snap-on adapter for audio interfaces, mixers and keyboards. Black.
Closed-Back · Over-Ear · Isolation
Made for Recording and Mixing
Monitor headphones have a different job from consumer headphones: they need to let you hear what you are recording as it really is, and they must not leak sound back into the microphone. The ATH-M20x’s closed-back, circumaural earcups surround your ears and isolate you from the room, which helps you focus on a vocal take, an instrument or a voiceover, and keeps the click track out of your recording. It is equally useful for checking a mix, editing a podcast or a YouTube video, practising an electric keyboard or guitar through an amp modeller late at night, or simply listening in a noisy house. The earcups swivel by up to 15°, so you can lift one side off to hear the room without taking the headphones off.
40mm Drivers · 47 Ohms · 96dB
Clear Sound, Easy to Drive
Inside each earcup is a 40mm dynamic driver with a rare-earth magnet and copper-clad aluminium voice coil, covering 15Hz to 20kHz. Audio-Technica tunes the M20x for enhanced low-frequency performance, so bass lines and kick drums come through with weight while vocals stay clear. At 47 ohms with 96dB sensitivity, they are easy to drive: they reach comfortable volume from a laptop, a phone with a headphone jack or adapter, a USB audio interface, a mixer or a digital piano, with no headphone amplifier needed. That makes them a practical all-rounder — a studio headphone that also works for everyday listening, gaming on a PC or console controller with a 3.5mm jack, and watching films without disturbing others.
3m Cable · 3.5mm + 6.3mm · 190g
Studio-Friendly Cable and Comfort
The straight 3-metre cable exits from the left earcup only, so it stays out of the way while you play or edit, and it is long enough to reach an interface or mixer at the back of a desk. It ends in a 3.5mm plug, and a 6.3mm (1/4″) snap-on adapter is included for the larger headphone sockets found on audio interfaces, mixers, amplifiers and keyboards. Note that the cable is fixed to the headphones rather than detachable. At about 190 grams without the cable, with padded earcups and headband modelled on the higher M-Series models, the M20x is light enough for long sessions. Replacement earpads are available from Audio-Technica, which helps the headphones last for years of daily use.
