The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is the M-Series model that serious home producers and engineers move up to when accuracy matters. Where the M20x and M30x are tuned for a lively, easy-listening sound, the M40x is tuned flat — so what you hear is what is really in the mix, without hyped bass or treble flattering your work. It adds the pro features of the higher M-Series models: detachable cables (a coiled cable and a straight cable are both included), earcups that swivel 90° for one-ear monitoring, a collapsible design and a carry pouch. 40mm drivers, 15Hz–24kHz, 35 ohms. Black.
Flat Tuning · 15Hz–24kHz · 40mm
Accurate Sound for Mixing
Consumer headphones usually boost bass and treble to sound exciting, which is fine for listening but misleading when you mix: a track balanced on hyped headphones often sounds thin or harsh everywhere else. The ATH-M40x is tuned flat across an extended 15Hz–24kHz range, so the low end, vocals and cymbals are presented as they are. That lets you set levels, EQ and compression with confidence and makes mixes that translate better to car stereos, earbuds and speakers. The 40mm drivers use rare-earth magnets and copper-clad aluminium voice coils, handle up to 1,600mW, and at 35 ohms with 98dB sensitivity they reach plenty of volume from an audio interface, mixer, laptop or keyboard without a separate headphone amplifier.
Detachable Cables · Coiled + Straight
Two Cables, Easy to Replace
Unlike the M20x and M30x, the M40x has a detachable cable — the part of any headphone most likely to fail — so a damaged lead is a quick swap rather than the end of the headphones. Two cables are in the box: a coiled cable that stretches from 1.2m to 3m, ideal at a DJ booth, drum kit or busy desk where a straight lead would tangle, and a 3m straight cable for listening at a distance from your interface. Both end in a gold-plated 3.5mm plug with strain relief, and a screw-on 6.3mm (1/4″) adapter is included for the larger headphone sockets on interfaces, mixers, amplifiers and digital pianos. The cable locks into the left earcup, keeping it out of the way while you work.
90° Swivel · Foldable · Closed-Back
Built for Studio and DJ Use
The earcups swivel through 90°, so you can hold one side to your ear and leave the other open — the standard way DJs cue the next track while hearing the room, and handy for talking to a performer between takes. The closed-back, circumaural design seals around your ears for excellent isolation with minimal bleed into microphones, and the professional-grade earpads and headband are made for long sessions. The headphones collapse for storage and come with a carry pouch, so they travel well between home, studio and gigs. They weigh about 240 grams without the cable. Replacement earpads are available from Audio-Technica, which helps the M40x stay in service for years.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the ATH-M40x different from the M30x?
The M40x is tuned flat for accurate mixing, has a detachable cable with both coiled and straight cables included, and its earcups swivel 90° for one-ear monitoring. The M30x has a fixed cable and a more detail-focused, less neutral tuning.
Is the cable detachable?

Are they good for DJing?
Yes. The earcups swivel 90° for one-ear monitoring, the coiled cable suits a DJ booth, and the closed-back design isolates you from loud environments.
Do they work with an audio interface?
Yes. Use the included screw-on 6.3mm (1/4″) adapter. At 35 ohms with 98dB sensitivity they are easy to drive without a headphone amplifier.
