Sony IER-Z1R Original Replacement Cable – 4.4mm Balanced, MMCX, 1.2m

Conductors

Silver-Coated OFC with Silk Braid

Sony built the IER-Z1R cable around silver-coated oxygen-free copper conductors, chosen for low resistance and clean high-frequency detail. A braided silk layer sits beneath the outer jacket to reduce cable noise when the cable brushes against clothing, and to keep the cable supple rather than springy. The result is a cable that stays quiet on the move, coils neatly into the IER-Z1R case and matches the tuning Sony intended for the earphones — no colouration from an unknown aftermarket cable.

Balanced Output

4.4mm Pentaconn Balanced Plug

The 4.4mm balanced plug separates the left and right channels all the way from the amplifier to the drivers, lowering crosstalk and letting balanced players deliver more power and a wider soundstage. It is the standard balanced connector on Sony Walkman models such as the NW-WM1A, NW-WM1Z and NW-ZX707, the TA-ZH1ES amplifier and many DACs from other brands. The L-shaped plug reduces strain when a player sits in a pocket, and the non-magnetic gold plating ensures a clean, corrosion-free contact.

Fit

MMCX with Pre-Formed Ear Hooks

The cable uses MMCX connectors at the earphone end, coloured red for right and silver for left, with alloy housings sized for the recessed sockets on the IER-Z1R. Pre-formed ear hooks guide the cable over the ear for a secure, over-ear fit, and a chin slider below the splitter lets you tighten the fit while moving. The total length is approximately 1.2m — long enough for a jacket pocket without excess cable. It is also physically compatible with other Sony MMCX earphones such as the IER-M7 and IER-M9.

Right choice if you…

✔ Own a Sony IER-Z1R and need a replacement 4.4mm cable
✔ Bought a used IER-Z1R that came without the 4.4mm cable
✔ Listen from Sony Walkman NW-WM1A/WM1Z/ZX707 and other players or DACs with a 4.4mm balanced output
✔ Want Sony’s original tuning rather than an aftermarket cable
✔ Use other Sony MMCX in-ears such as the IER-M7 or IER-M9

Consider something else if…

✖ You need the 3.5mm plug instead — see Sony IER-Z1R Original Replacement Cable — 3.5mm
✖ You want Sony’s Kimber Kable upgrade — see Sony MUC-M12SB2 Kimber Kable 4.4mm
✖ Your phone has no headphone jack — you will need a USB-C or Lightning DAC adapter

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same cable that comes with the IER-Z1R?

Yes — it is the original-style Sony IER-Z1R cable with silver-coated OFC conductors, MMCX connectors and pre-formed ear hooks. The IER-Z1R includes both a 3.5mm and a 4.4mm version; this listing is the 4.4mm version only.

Why might it arrive in bulk packaging?

Depending on the batch, these cables are supplied either in Sony retail packaging or in plain bulk packaging, as they are often distributed as replacement parts. In both cases the cable is brand new and unused.

Will it fit the recessed MMCX sockets on the IER-Z1R?

Yes. The alloy MMCX housings are sized for the IER-Z1R recessed sockets. Many aftermarket cables with thick shrink tubing do not seat fully, which is a common reason owners choose the original cable.

Does it work with the IER-M7 and IER-M9?

Yes. The IER-M7 and IER-M9 also use MMCX connectors, so this cable connects and works with them, although those models ship with their own Sony cables.

What can I plug the 4.4mm balanced cable into?

Any player, amp or DAC with a 4.4mm balanced (Pentaconn) output — for example Sony Walkman NW-WM1A, NW-WM1Z, NW-ZX707 and many portable DACs. It will not fit a 3.5mm socket without a balanced adapter.
