Like every Apple MagSafe Charger, this one ships as a cable and puck only. The wattage of the adapter you plug it into sets the charging speed: 30W or higher gives the full 25W, a 20W adapter limits you to 15W, and an older 5W adapter will be very slow. If you do not already own a 30W or higher USB-C adapter, add one — it is the single thing that determines whether this charges fast.

Why Two People Get Different Results

The MagSafe puck has no power source of its own — it passes through whatever the wall adapter gives it, and that is where nearly every complaint about slow MagSafe charging comes from. Apple’s requirement for the full 25W is an adapter rated 30W or higher, supplying at least 15V at 2.0A. Plug the same charger into a 20W adapter, the kind sold with earlier iPhones, and Apple confirm you will get 15W rather than 25W — the charger is working correctly, it simply cannot draw power that the adapter does not supply. An old 5W iPhone brick will charge, but slowly enough to feel broken. This is worth checking before assuming a fault: look at the small print on your adapter for its wattage. If it says 20W, that is your ceiling. It is also why buying a MagSafe charger and an appropriate adapter together makes sense — one without the other does not deliver what the box promises.

What Your Phone Can Actually Take

The second half of the equation is the phone. 25W MagSafe charging arrived with the iPhone 16 generation, and it is the first time an iPhone could fast charge wirelessly at all. On iPhone 12, 13, 14 and 15, this charger works perfectly but tops out at 15W — the newer charger does not raise the ceiling on an older handset, because the limit is in the phone. If you own an iPhone 15 and expected 25W, that is the reason. Even within the iPhone 16 range, 25W is a peak rather than a constant: Apple’s own figures put the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro at 22.5W in practice, and iPhone Air at 20W. There is one more limit that catches people out because nothing on screen explains it — if you have a USB-C accessory such as wired headphones plugged into the phone while it charges on MagSafe, charging drops sharply to comply with regulatory limits: 7.5W on the iPhone 16 range, 10W on iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, 16W on iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. Unplug the accessory and full speed returns.

Why Magnets Beat a Flat Pad

Wireless charging works by inductive coupling between a coil in the charger and a coil in the phone, and the efficiency of that coupling falls away quickly as the two coils move out of alignment. On a flat pad you are aligning them by eye, which is why a phone nudged an inch overnight can be at 20 percent in the morning. MagSafe removes the guesswork: a ring of magnets in the puck meets the matching ring in every iPhone from the 12 onwards, and the coils land concentric every time. That is where the speed advantage comes from as much as the wattage. The 2 metre cable is the practical reason to choose this version over the 1 metre — it reaches a bedside table from a skirting board socket, or across a desk, without an extension lead. The puck also works as a standard Qi and Qi2 charger for anything else that charges wirelessly, including AirPods cases and iPhone 8 onwards, though without magnets on those devices you place them by hand as you would on any pad. A case will not stop it working, but very thick cases, metal plates or magnetic mounts between the puck and the phone will weaken or block it.

It is charging slowly — is the charger faulty?

Almost always it is the power adapter rather than the charger. Check the wattage printed on your adapter. A 30W or higher adapter is needed for 25W; a 20W adapter limits you to 15W; an older 5W adapter will be very slow. Then check three other things: your iPhone model, since 25W only applies to iPhone 16 and later; whether a USB-C accessory such as headphones is plugged into the phone, which drops charging to 7.5W on the iPhone 16 range; and whether anything thick or metal is between the puck and the phone.

Is a power adapter included?

No. Apple supplies the MagSafe Charger as a puck and cable only, with no wall adapter, so you use one you already own or buy separately. For the full 25W you need one rated 30W or higher, delivering at least 15V at 2.0A. Any brand of USB-C Power Delivery adapter at that rating will work — it does not have to be Apple’s.

Will I get 25W on my iPhone 14 or 15?

No. 25W MagSafe charging is a feature of iPhone 16 and later. On iPhone 12, 13, 14 and 15 this charger works fully but at up to 15W, and no adapter will raise that — the limit is in the phone, not the charger. The 2 metre cable and magnetic alignment still apply, so it remains a good charger for those models; just at 15W.

Why does charging slow down when my headphones are plugged in?

This is an Apple regulatory limit rather than a fault, and nothing on screen explains it. With a USB-C or Lightning accessory connected to the phone, MagSafe charging is capped at 7.5W on iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, 10W on iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, and 16W on iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. Unplug the accessory and normal speed resumes.

Does it work through a case?

Through most cases, yes, and best through MagSafe cases which contain their own magnet ring. Very thick cases, cases with metal plates for car mounts, wallets and anything magnetic between the puck and the phone will weaken the connection or stop charging altogether. If charging is intermittent, take the case off and test again to isolate it.

Can I charge AirPods or an Android phone with it?

Yes to AirPods with a wireless charging case, and to any Qi or Qi2 device including Android phones — the puck works as a standard wireless charger. Magnetic alignment only happens with iPhone 12 and later, so on other devices you position them by hand as you would on any pad, and charging runs at that device’s standard Qi rate rather than 25W.
