The urBeats 2 earbud housing is described by Beats as “precision-machined single-billet metal” — meaning each housing is formed from a single piece of metal stock rather than two moulded halves joined at a seam. Seams in plastic housings can flex and vibrate sympathetically with the driver, adding a low-frequency coloration to the sound that users perceive as a loose or muddy bass quality. A single-piece metal housing has no seam to flex and far higher acoustic damping than injection-moulded plastic, so the housing stays acoustically inert while the driver moves. The practical result is that the bass from the urBeats 2 is tighter and more defined than comparably priced plastic earphones — the low frequencies come from the driver rather than from housing resonance. The metal construction also contributes to durability: the housing is resistant to the cracking and delamination that affects plastic earphone housings after months of daily use.

The urBeats 2 favours a warmer, more bass-forward sound profile than a neutral studio reference, which suits the music genres — pop, hip-hop, R&B, electronic — that the earphones were designed for. The in-ear design contributes directly to bass quality: when the correct eartip creates a seal against the ear canal walls, bass builds up in the sealed space and the driver operates as intended. An incorrect or loose tip breaks the seal and significantly reduces bass output.

During calls: press once to answer or end, double press to reject an incoming call. Volume buttons adjust level in real time.
