The First S Pen with Remote Control

Every S Pen before the Note 9 was a passive EMR stylus — it had no electronics of its own and required physical contact with the display to function. When removed from the phone, it was inert. The Note 9 S Pen was Samsung’s first to add an internal battery and Bluetooth Low Energy radio, making it an active device capable of communicating with the phone wirelessly at up to 10 metres. The single button on the S Pen body is programmable via the Bixby button settings — by default, a single click fires the camera shutter (front or rear), a click and hold switches between front and rear camera, a double click launches the default camera app. In Samsung Notes, a click and hold fires Air Command. These Air Actions are customisable per app through the S Pen settings menu. The Bluetooth battery charges automatically every time the pen is returned to the silo in the phone — 40 seconds in the silo provides approximately 30 minutes of Bluetooth use. The pen does not require a separate charger. If the Bluetooth battery is depleted, the pen continues to function as a normal EMR stylus for writing and drawing — the Bluetooth functionality is additive, not essential to core operation.

Writing, Drawing and Note-Taking Precision

The core EMR (Electromagnetic Resonance) stylus specification of the Note 9 S Pen is the same as established across Samsung’s Note range: 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and full tilt and angle detection. The 4096 pressure levels mean that the stylus distinguishes 4096 distinct grades of pen-to-screen pressure, enabling brush weight variation in drawing applications comparable to a physical pen on paper — light pressure produces thin strokes, heavy pressure produces thick ones, with a smooth continuous gradient between. Angle detection allows brush applications to simulate the behaviour of real calligraphy pens and brushes, where tilting the pen changes the stroke shape. The 0.7mm tip is a fine point that gives accurate placement on screen — practical for handwriting, precise annotation and detailed illustration without the stylus tip obscuring the writing line. The EMR technology requires no battery for stylus input — the pen draws its operating power from the phone’s display resonance field, meaning input response is immediate with no latency from a wireless connection. Replacement tips are available from Samsung and are user-replaceable with the included tip removal tool.

Replacement for Lost or Damaged Pen

The Note 9 S Pen is physically specific to the Galaxy Note 9 — it is sized and shaped to fit the Note 9’s silo, which is also the charging contact for the Bluetooth battery. S Pens from other Note models (Note 8, Note 10, Note 20) will fit the Note 9 silo and function as basic EMR styluses, but they do not have Bluetooth and cannot perform Air Actions. This Violet variant matches the Lavender Purple Note 9 body colour: the pen body and tip are violet/lavender purple, consistent with the colour blocking of the Lavender Purple phone. The Midnight Black Note 9 ships with an all-black S Pen. If you own a Lavender Purple Note 9 and need to replace a lost or damaged pen, this Violet variant restores the original matching colour combination. The pen includes the standard ejection mechanism — pressing the end of the pen when it is inserted in the silo causes it to spring-eject for removal.

Will this S Pen work with the Galaxy Note 8 or Note 10?

It will physically fit the Note 8 silo and function as a basic EMR stylus for writing and drawing, but the Bluetooth Air Actions will not work — the Note 8 does not have the software or hardware to support Note 9 S Pen Bluetooth commands. For the Note 10, the pen will not fit the silo at all (different dimensions). This pen is designed specifically for the Note 9.

How do I pair the S Pen Bluetooth with my Note 9?

Insert the S Pen into the Note 9 silo and leave it for at least 40 seconds — the Bluetooth battery charges automatically via contact charging. Once charged, remove the pen and open Settings → Advanced Features → S Pen → Air Actions. The pen pairs automatically when in range; no manual Bluetooth pairing in the Bluetooth settings menu is required.

Can I replace the tip myself?

Yes. The pen includes a replacement tip and a metal tip removal tool. Grip the current tip with the tool’s loop, pull straight out, and press the new tip in until it clicks. Replacement tip packs are also available separately from Samsung.

Does Air Actions work if the Bluetooth battery is dead?

No — Air Actions requires the Bluetooth connection. If the battery is depleted, the pen continues to function as a full EMR stylus for on-screen writing and drawing, but the remote button actions are unavailable until the pen is recharged in the silo (40 seconds restores approximately 30 minutes of Bluetooth use).

Is the Violet pen only for the Lavender Purple Note 9?

The Violet pen is the colour variant that shipped with the Lavender Purple Galaxy Note 9, but it is functionally identical to the Black pen that shipped with the Midnight Black Note 9. Both pens work in any Note 9. The Violet variant is a colour preference — choose it to match the Lavender Purple phone or simply as a personal preference.
