The AM115 uses a semi-in-ear design — the earphone sits at the entrance of the ear canal rather than inserting into it like a full canal earphone. This is the same form factor as Apple’s original EarPods design and the original iPod earbuds, adapted by Huawei with a shaped housing designed to fit the outer ear’s concha geometry. For users who find standard canal earphones uncomfortable — either because of the pressure of insertion or the sealed, occluded feeling of a tight canal seal — the semi-in-ear design eliminates both issues. The earphone housing rests in the ear without creating an airtight seal, which also means some ambient sound is always audible, making the AM115 more suitable for use in environments where awareness of surroundings is important — desk work, walking on streets, conversations in shared spaces. Full Control from the Cable

The AM115 inline remote provides three functions: volume up, volume down, and a centre multifunction button for call answer/end and playback control. On Huawei devices, the remote communicates via the Huawei headset protocol, which supports full volume control, call functions and voice assistant activation. On other Android devices, inline volume control depends on the device’s headset firmware — most Android phones from 2016 onwards support the standard three-button CTIA remote protocol and respond to volume button presses. On iOS (iPhone), the centre button works for play/pause and call control, but volume control through the Android-standard remote is not supported — use iPhone’s own buttons for volume. The built-in microphone is integrated into the remote housing and is positioned at mid-cable level when the earphones are worn, providing clear voice capture for calls in moderate noise environments. The remote also includes a hardware on/off switch on some AM115 variants, which mutes the microphone circuit independently of the call state — useful for muting during conference calls without ending the call. The straight 3.5mm plug is the standard configuration for a cable that routes down from the ear to a device in a pocket or bag.

The AM115 was Huawei’s bundled wired earphone across the Huawei P9, P10, P20, P30 Lite, Mate 10, Mate 20 Lite, Nova 3, Nova 5T, Y-series, and Honor 10, Honor 20 and similar handsets from approximately 2016 to 2019. Users who received the AM115 in the box with their Huawei phone and need a replacement are buying the same earphone they already know. Genuine Huawei accessories ensure full remote protocol compatibility — third-party earphones marketed for Huawei compatibility vary in their implementation of the Huawei headset protocol, which can result in intermittent volume button response or microphone quality issues that the genuine AM115 does not exhibit. Huawei handsets from approximately 2020 onwards — Nova 6, P40 series, Mate 40 series, and later — moved to USB-C without retaining a 3.5mm headphone jack. For these devices, the AM115 requires Huawei’s USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. For Huawei devices that still have a 3.5mm jack (P30, Mate 20, Nova 5T, Y-series, and similar), the AM115 connects directly. The AM115 also works on Samsung Galaxy, any Android phone, and iPhone via the standard 3.5mm connection — audio and microphone function universally.

Do these work with Huawei P40, Mate 40 or newer Huawei phones?

The AM115 uses a 3.5mm plug. Huawei P40, Mate 40, Nova 6 series and later removed the 3.5mm headphone jack — these phones use USB-C for audio output. A Huawei USB-C to 3.5mm adapter is required to connect the AM115 to these devices. On Huawei devices that still have a 3.5mm jack — P30, Mate 20, Nova 5T, Y-series, and most phones from 2019 and earlier — the AM115 connects directly.

Will the volume buttons work on Samsung or iPhone?

On Samsung Galaxy and most Android phones with a 3.5mm jack, the volume buttons work as inline volume control. On iPhone, the centre button (play/pause, call answer) works, but the volume buttons are not recognised by iOS — use iPhone’s physical buttons for volume. The microphone functions for calls on all platforms.

Is the semi-in-ear design different from canal earphones?
