The Lexar NM800 1TB is the flagship of Lexar’s NVMe line: PCIe Gen4 ×4 with manufacturer-rated reads up to 7,400MB/s — around thirteen times SATA speed. This is the drive for machines that move serious data: video editing scratch disks, game libraries that load in seconds, and workstations where storage is the bottleneck.
Gen4 speed
Up to 7,400MB/s read
PCIe 4.0 ×4 doubles the lane bandwidth of Gen3 drives. Large project files, 4K/8K footage and modern games built for fast storage (DirectStorage) all feel the difference directly.
Form factor
M.2 2280 — the standard
The universal gumstick format fits modern desktop boards and most laptops. On a Gen3 slot it still works — capped at that slot’s speed — so it survives your next platform upgrade.
Capacity
1TB of working space
Enough for an OS, a professional application suite and an active project archive — or a substantial game library — without the constant triage a 500GB system drive demands.
Right choice if you…
✔ Edit video or work with large files daily
✔ Have a PCIe 4.0 slot (AM4 X570/B550, AM5, Intel 11th gen+)
✔ Want next-gen game loading with DirectStorage
✔ Are building or upgrading a serious workstation
Consider something else if…
✖ Your machine is Gen3-only and staying that way — the NM620 saturates a Gen3 slot for less
✖ You’re reviving an older laptop with a SATA bay — see the NS100 SATA
✖ General office use — Gen4 headroom goes unused on documents and browsing

Frequently Asked Questions
Will it work in my PCIe Gen3 machine?
Yes — NVMe is backwards compatible. It runs at the slot’s Gen3 ceiling (~3,500MB/s), and unlocks full speed if you later move it to a Gen4 board.
Does it need a heatsink?
For sustained heavy writes a motherboard M.2 heatsink helps Gen4 drives hold peak speed. For typical mixed use it runs fine without one.
Is it good for PS5 expansion?
The PS5 requires a Gen4 drive with a heatsink fitted; the NM800’s interface qualifies — add a compatible heatsink before installing.
NM800 or NM760?
Both are Gen4. The NM800 is the faster flagship; the NM760 is the efficient mainstream choice. For scratch-disk and heavy creative work, the NM800 earns its position.
